INTRODUCTION
The Primary aim of this bibliography is to produce a systematic guide to the most important works in the European Languages, mostly in English, on Iraq, its history, its people, its cultural background, and its various phases of development. The Bibliography is intended for the use of research workers, students, government officials, and anyone who has a reseach interest in the Country.
The Compiler, as a University Librarian, has always felt the need for a comprehensive bibliography on Iraq which would facilitate study and research in this area.
To my knowledge no attempt has been made, until date, to fill the gap. There are a number of general bibliographies which tried to treat the subject as a part of Middle Eastern studies, but they all lack comprehensiveness.
The Work began by searching through the Card Catalog of the University of Basrah Library, then proceeded to checking bibliographies, catalogs of Iraqi and foreign libraries, publishers catalogs. General indexes to periodicals were also consulted. The Compiler has tried very hard to verify the information he finds in more than one source. Actually the list of sources consulted is the body of the work.
The Bibliography covers books, pamphlets, official publications, Master theses and Ph.D. Dissertations in the European languages, the majority being in English. All works selected are printed between 1900 and 1975, except in few cases such as classic works and travels, which are considered essential background sources for the researcher, therefore, they should not be neglected.
Arabic publications are not included here. These form another comprehensive bibliography which is prepared by the same compiler, and it is ready for printing separately.
The Bibliography has been arranged by the main classes of the Dewey Decimal Classification with slight modifications. Each book is listed under one main entry, usually this is the author, although it may occasionally be the editor, or even a title only. Each book was placed where it was felt the book as a whole fitted best.
Each entry cites name of author or editor, title, edition (if other than the first) place of publication, publisher, date of publication, page numbers or volumes when relevant, and illustration.
It was not intended to include annotations, but some of the items have been annotated when it was found necessary to explain their contents.
It is well-known that no bibliography claims to be comprehensive and completely correct. This bibliography is not an exception, especially because it is one man’s work. The compiler welcomes any suggestions, corrections, or addition making it possible to improve a new edition of this work.
As always I am indebted to my wife for her continuous encouragement and support.
