For the study of whatever subject, a bibliography is an indispensable basic tool. Like in Kurdology in general, it were especially such tools, which are still lacking to an amazingly high degree.
The biggest bibliographical effort in the field has -so far- been made by Miss Z. S, Musaèlian and Mr.V.B. Portugal’, under direction of Prof. Dr. Qanatê Kurdo.
Their “Bibliografija po Kurdovedeniju” (Moskva, 1963, Izd. Vost. Lit.) lists 2768 entries, about 1600 being Russian or Soviet. Especially for these categories, it was a priceless source, worth of the U.F.S.R.’s Kurdological reputation.
In the English-speaking orbit, Mr. C. J. Edmonds has two bibliographies of mainly Iraqi Kurdish material to his credit, another of his pioneering acts in this under-explored field.

FOREWORD

With over nine-thousand entries, the present “Kurdish Bibliography Nr.I” is the largest one on the subject so far. Entries being taken from some fourty different languages, it is also the most international one.

No item coming to ISK’s knowledge after July 1st, 1966 has been included. This will be done in complementary bibliographies to appear in IFE's “Kurdistan Yèar- books”

Actual bibliographical information of Kurdish interest is given monthly in IEK’s info-service “Kurdish Facts”, the rubric “Current Bibliography" taking an average of four pages per issue.
Non-scentific press-articles have been included into the first "Kurdish Bibliography" of ISK to a large extend, but as a rule are not indexed.

A bibliography’s aim being to list rather than to value, we saw no convincing reason to make a principal difference between press- and other materials.

In many cases, newspapers are the main, if not the only source of information on broad sections of modern Kurdish history.

Even faked reporting like the "eyewitness account” of the “burial" of Kurdish leader: Mistefa Barzanî, printed on the front-page of the Turkish daily "Cumhurjyet" of January 1st, 1963, is not without interest to the serious historian.

And as to. certain "official” and “scientific” publications, guess-work and even conscious distortion of facts can be found either. The difference between press and other material is often smaller than is generally assumed.

Several circumstances, among them the ultimate refusal of a governmental subsidy first unofficially hinted by the Dutch "Organization for Pure Scientific Research", contributed to a much belated publication of this bibliography, the delay being rather annoying to all concerned.
Of the numerous acknowledgements due, a few maybe made here explicitly in representation. There is ISK’s Cracow correspondent Mr Andrzej Zaborski, who translated some 1700 russophone entries into English, refusing any fee.

A great many Lebanese and other newspaper articles in French could be listed thanks to the comradely help of Miss Joyce Blau, then of Brussels.
The constant advice pf Père Dr Thomas Bois O. P., Mr. C. J. Edmonds and Dr. Moh. Mokrî was often inspiring and without the friendly intermediary of Mr Ed van Praag the book would probably not have appeared at all.

We sincerelyhope they will forgive us benevolently the inadequacies this work is most likely to contain. Any critical comment or complementary entries users may be willing to offer is explicitly solicited, and as will be understood easily, most warmly welcomed.
